Acht mar uisge d’éis a leata

[Ó Cróinín, Dáibhí I.: ‘A poet in penitential mood’, Celtica 16, 169-74]

DONATI DUAE CARMINA

Lympha coacta gelu, duris licet aemula saxis

Desinit in tenuem, lumine solis, aquam.

Soluit ita in lachrimas iusti commota doloris

Vis scelerum glaciem qua male corda rigent.

Qua premor ergo deus vitiorum digere molem

Que cumulata grauis pondere dura mora est.

1 Acht mar uisge d’éis a leata

damadh léir dod’ thuigsi, a thruaigh! -

grían ar eas nó ar úir ar ttoirneamh,

ní feas dúin an t-oighreadh uaidh.

2 Mar sin ’nar léir leat an peacadh:

port na ndéar dá sileadh sé

’s gu mbiadh astigh teas an Coimdhe,

amuigh is feas oirne hé.

3 Roibeag mh’aithrighe acht gidh annamh,

olc an gléas dá ghearradh fúin;

do leathnuidh sin fpréamh mo fpeacaidh -

ní fhuil déar fár ndeacair dúin.

Ag mar sin do chuir Donnchadh Ó Cobthaigh na roinn Laidne-sin a nGaoídheilg ar

Loch Dearg, Anno 1584.
